Healthwatch Rochdale Responds to Government Announcement of Healthwatch Closure

Healthwatch Rochdale expresses deep concern and disappointment following the Government's announcement that Healthwatch England and the network of local Healthwatch bodies across the country are to be closed.

This decision, as reported by the BBC and other national media, threatens to silence the voices of thousands of individuals across Rochdale and beyond. For over a decade, Healthwatch has been the independent champion for people using health and social care services in England,  collecting feedback, amplifying local concerns, and influencing improvements in service delivery.

“This announcement is a devastating blow to patient voice and local accountability. The role of Healthwatch in ensuring that people’s experiences drive improvements in care is more important than ever, particularly in light of patient safety concerns identified in national reports. We urge the Government to reconsider,” said Kate Jones, CEO of Healthwatch Rochdale.

A Track Record of Impact since its inception, Healthwatch Rochdale has worked across care homes, hospitals, GP surgeries, and with seldom-heard communities to ensure residents’ needs and experiences are represented. From raising concerns to facilitating positive changes, our work has contributed directly to improving the quality and safety of care.

Importance Amid National Challenges

The closure announcement comes at a time when patient safety and quality of care are under intense national scrutiny. The DASH (Data on Adverse Safety and Harm) report, published earlier this year, highlighted persistent and systemic risks in patient safety across NHS services. These risks demand greater transparency, accountability, and the incorporation of patient voice, not less.

Similarly, the NHS Long Term Plan places a strong emphasis on “people-powered health” ,  recognising the value of patient involvement in service design, care coordination, and decision-making. The dismantling of the Healthwatch network runs counter to the commitments made in this strategy, undermining ambitions for integrated, person-centred care.

Our Commitment Going Forward

We do not yet have full details beyond those shared in media reports. As more information becomes available, we will provide timely updates on our website and social media channels. In the meantime, Healthwatch Rochdale remains committed to serving our community and advocating for local people.

Healthwatch Rochdale thanks the many individuals and partners who have worked with us, trusted us with their stories, and joined us in striving for a better health and social care system. The need for independent patient voice has never been greater.
